Had a crack at orienteering today. I have only done it once before so am a newbie. The run was situated down by the Manawatu River with some on and off road areas to visit.

We had 10 minutes to study the map before it was time to run for an hour. My method was to go for the 4 pointers and I was quite successful with these but did not manage enough smaller points and finished mid field.

To read the map, run, find the controls and then take off again was q lot of fun on this sunny and warm August day. I reckon I covered 10+ kms.

The Red Kiwi Orienteering Club organise these events and can be found at rk.orienteering.org.nz
The next one is in a fortnight. There were runners, walkers, people in family groups and all ages represented.
