Fitbit

Another fab feature of the fitbit surge is GPS tracking. I was very good at over estimating my running distances but now with the surge it is accurate to a few metres!Screen Shot 2017-01-12 at 8.07.04 PM.png

I’ve been using the MAF heart rate method for training since September last year. After a little adjustment I am now running around 7 minute per km training pace. See above for a recent run.

And below – here is the heart rate map.Screen Shot 2017-01-12 at 8.15.49 PM.pngAs you can see mostly around my max of 127bpm apart from the start and the finish – not enough warm up and a sprint at the end just for fun! (It’s always good to be a few beats under the max rather than over)

The fitbit surge captures all this information and more and once it is synced with the phone it is available to view at your leisure.

I am in a build up phase for the Great Forest Half Marathon in early April – always a great day in the Waitarere Forest. Entered today!

So lots more slow running as I gradually build up to half marathon fitness with my fitbit surge.

Waitarere Beach

Took a Sunday drive down to Waitarere beach today. We talked about times past when our parents took us on a Sunday drive back in the day – but today we had no kids to placate and entertain – we only had the dogs!

And Ellie did love the beach. It had been quite a while since we had taken her to the beach – months in fact – so it was delightful to see her do her happy dance when she went off leash near the surf.DSC_0416.JPG

Mac loves the sea so much he wants to taste it! Often he’ll drink so much that he will make himself sick although not today – he only sampled a little as Ellie can’t walk too far without fatiguing so we only spent 25 minutes on the sand. But look at that smile – he simply loves it!

Later in the evening after were had returned home we heard Mac bark outside the fence – we had left a gate open. He had a great day alright but who knows where he had been for his late afternoon stroll?

If you are a keen fitbit user you’ll know how strange it feels to be without your fitbit for a few days.

That is what I am experiencing currently – as you can see from the above photo – when my fitbit’s strap parted ways with itself one night as I slept.

After a brief search on the internet I discovered that many people had experienced the same problem of strap malfunction but had contacted fitbit and received a replacement. I promptly wrote an email to fitbit and received a reply a couple of hours later and after submitting a photograph and case number I was advised that fitbit would replace my tangerine surge for free even though the year’s warranty had expired.

What a bonus – an absolute bonus. I was going to explore strap repair or failing that save up for  new device.

You see – I find the fitbit to be a valuable companion in my daily activities. I’ll blog about that soon!

No One Reads These

My stats show that few if any people ever stumble upon these posts.

I am not worried – I am trying to re-kindle a habit of posting several times a week on topics that I enjoy.

Am currently listening to Falling Upwards by Richard Rohr.

Around the 3 hour mark he says

The gospel was able to accept that life is tragic but then graciously added that we can survive and will even grow  from this tragedy. This is the great turnaround. It all depends on whether we are willing to see down as up or as Jung put it – that where you stumble and fall there you find pure gold. Lady Julian put it even more poetically – First there is the fall and then we recover from the fall. Both are the mercy of God.

This is life!

Initiative

Having read Seth’s Poke the Box I mentioned the word initiative to the class today.

Even the kids with the widest vocabularies did not know what it meant!

Here is an online meaning:

  1. the ability to assess and initiate things independently.
“use your initiative, imagination, and common sense”
    synonyms: enterprise, inventiveness, resourcefulness, capability;

And another from a good old book dictionary: the first step or action of a matter; commencing move, the ability or attitude required to begin or initiate something

    What did you initiate today?DSC_0665

Poke The Box

Have just read Seth Godin’s ‘Poke the Box‘ book.

Written in short readable sections Seth’s points are well made and provoking.

My takeaways:

It is easy to plan and say but the rewards are in ‘shipping’ and doing.

Don’t be defeated by failure – learn and have another go – gain wisdom.

Don’t be afraid –

Be your own best friend – practice self compassion and self care.

Initiative!

Experience – real – not virtual – experience life – create action – do stuff.

As a teacher I need to encourage the children / community to start stuff. Right now they are keen on fundraising for the needy and also a new basketball goal!

Find the book and many more from Seth in your library, book store or online.
